Stunning Calla Liliy Designs

Calla lilies are natives of southern Africa, particularly from the range of South Africa to Malawi and the island of Madagascar.
In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, the lily represented the goddess Hera, from whom it was believed the flowers came.
In Roman mythology, Venus, the goddess of love and lust, saw the flowers, and in a fit of jealousy over their beauty, she made them grow a large pistil in their center.
The calla lily has meant different things at different periods in history, but its classic meaning is considered to be magnificent beauty.
Although calla lilies are thought of as classically white, today they are available in a wide variety of colors, including yellow, orange, pink and purple. Calla lilies make great cut flowers because they are long lasting, which makes them a popular choice for everything from wedding bouquets to decorative flower arrangements.

Sounds romantic to have a garden party, with gorgeous colours of flowers.

Flowers in her hair

The quintessential Indian woman has always believed in adorning her hair with flowers.

Here's what a friend told me;
"I have to admit before moving to India I didn't know about this. I asked another expat friend, "what does it signify?" He wasn't sure if it signified anything at all. "They just wear it for the scent and look of it," he told me.

Whenever I would see the girls walking around with the flowers in their hair, The Cowsills would pop into my head, and I'd be humming the tune all day.

One day, my friend came home and surprised me with flowers of my own.

In recent months, in India and Mumbai  prominent celebrities have been using flowers as hair accessories and to great advantage. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan set the trend this season in her song Udi from Guzaarish, where she wore a single, large red rose in her hair making her look drop-dead gorgeous.
What Ash does others automatically ape.

Now everyone from the high-society ladies, to the teenaged college-going girls are sporting large flowers or a feather cluster in their hair; making them the cynosure of all eyes at fashion events and social dos.
And me the florist, Laxmi Lobo loves it .
Flowers always look beautiful and the fragrance they give off, always puts ones senses into a ethereal space.

LAVENDER IN PROVENCE

The colour, the texture, and the scent of a lavender field encapsulate for many the essence of Provence.

The lavender in the Luberon blooms from around the last week of June to the beginning of August when it is harvested. It is usually at its peak in early July, but this depends on the rainfall in the year.

Lavender is said to heal insect bites and burns as well as repel insects. It can soothe headaches if you apply it to the temples and it helps you sleep if you have the flowers by your pillow. Dried lavender is used to repel moths in clothes closets. Lavender oil is also said to cure acne. The essential oil has antiseptic properties, it was used in hospitals in the 1st world war to disinfect wards. And of course it’s quite nice in the bath, for aromatherapy, and can be found in household products like room fresheners.

I love Lavender and the fragrance of dried lavender springs can be used to enhance the fragrance of a fresh flowers bouquet. In a hot humid month of June in my city Mumbai, a florist knows the tricks to deliver fresh flower bouquet to your house.

Flower Fashion

These are dresses made from Re-Cycled cemetery flowers!!
The concept might be a little creepy but the design sure looks colourful.

That's the bag of washed flowers from the cemetery :)

So....how did  make these dresses? Well, first one must have a bag full of artificial flowers from the cemetery. These were collected over several months....by dumpster diving and searching the insides of all the trash bins....NEVER from a grave site.
All the artificial flowers were dissected and the fabric carefully washed and dried. I used them in my recent solo show. They've been stored in clean kitchen trash bags.

Chocolate Flowers

The Chocolate Cosmos is a very rare flower.
It is a flower native to Mexico that has been extinct in the wild for over 100 years.
Still, the species survives as a single, non-fertile clone created in 1902 by propagation.
The flowers are a rich deep-brown color and grow to about 3-4 cm in diameter.
As the name suggests, Chocolate Cosmos emit a delicious vanillin fragrance in the summer (also found in vanilla beans, some coffee beans and some cocoa beans).  Yum, slurrp....

Chocolate Orchids, are a wonder of nature.
When you smell these orchids, you'll be hit by a wonderful chocolate scent floating up from dozens of tiny blossoms.
"Sharry Baby" the oncidium orchid is spectacular in its festive splashes of chocolate and white. The flowers appear to be soft and delicate, but the petals actually have a firm, almost leathery feel to them.
Flowers of these species are one of the sweetest fragrances you can smell.
The Sharry Baby is also  one of the easiest orchids to grow.
Its spiky stems can reach up to 3 feet in height with multiple (up to a hundred) purple-red mini blooms. Its velvety long green leaves are the perfect frame to showcase its amazing sweet-scented flowers.
Just like chocolate, they can be very addictive....

A Turquoise rarity

The Jade Vine   has spectacular blue-green, claw-shaped flowers.
It produces a hanging inflorescence of color seldom seen in any other flower.
An unsual fact is that the flower is pollinated by bats which will hang upside down to drink the nectar.
These rare flowers are now hardly seen in the wild and are believed to be threatened by the deforestation of their natural habitat in the Philippines.
If your interested in growing a Jade vine, here is a tutorial on how to make the Jade Vine bloom.

My fascination is the colour and the rarity of the flower, being native Philipines, it should grow just as easily in many parts of tropical India. Continue reading

The stunning tulip fields

The stunning tulip fields that look like they have been created with a giant pack of crayons...

A vast patchwork of kaleidoscopic colour, Holland's tulip fields are clearly nothing to be sneezed at.
From the air it looks as though a giant toddler armed with a box of super-sized crayons has been let loose on the Dutch countryside... if the lines weren't quite so perfect.

Flowers on a cake

The fondant flowers on this cake look so attractive.
They are artistically created roses, but are like a cross between a rose and a dahlia.
This is what I find so creative, any shape made to look like a flower spurs the creativity and looks attractive.
Nature has made flowers so beautiful and we reflect this beauty in various forms of decorations.

Up side down Flowers

I noticed this fun play with flowers while browsing my favorite topic...you guessed it..."flowers" on Google.
Such a simple look but catches your attention. This would make a great table display and various colour contrasts can be used.
You can also try this with coloured glasses and white flowers inside.

Flowers are the easiet art to create, anything looks beautiful because inherently the flowers are beautiful themseleves, the florist has to just add a simple touch, a creative imagination and you always create a stunning display.

The Kumbh Mela and floating flowers.

Kumbh Mela (/ˌkʊm ˈmeɪlə/ or /ˌkʊm məˈlɑː/; Devanagari: कुम्भ मेला) is a mass Hindu pilgrimage in which Hindus gather at the Sangam, meeting place, of the rivers Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Sarasvati, at Prayag where bathing for purification from sin is considered especially auspicious. The festival is billed as the "biggest gathering on Earth"; in 2001 more than 40 million gathered on the busiest of its 55 days.

The current Maha Kumbh Mela began on 14 January, 2013 at Allahabad (Prayag). [10]. According to expectations more than 100 million people will attend the 2013 Kumbha mela.

After visiting the Kumbh Mela of 1895, Mark Twain wrote:
“It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining. It is done in love, or it is done in fear; I do not know which it is. No matter what the impulse is, the act born of it is beyond imagination, marvelous to our kind of people, the cold whites"

The offering of flowers with a candle is left floating on the waters of the Ganges. It is ethereal,  the float of fragrance and light into eternity. ...

Zucchini Flowers

If the thought of feasting on flowers makes you feel a bit standoffish, then here's food for thought: You may already be eating flowers without realizing it. If your diet includes broccoli, cauliflower or artichokes, you are essentially consuming the flowering bud of the plant. Need further convincing? Flowers have been accenting world cuisines for thousands of years, dating back to the use of chrysanthemums by the ancient Chinese. More..

Vegetables which are Flowers.

Flowers even provide several important foods and spices. Flower vegetables include cauliflower, artichokes, and broccoli. Saffron, the most expensive spice, consists of dried stigmas of a crocus. Cloves and capers are two more spices. Hops are used to flavor beer. Marigolds are fed to chickens to give their egg yolks a golden yellow color, which consumers find more desirable. Dandelions are often made into wine.
Amazing facts aren't they?
