The quintessential Indian woman has always believed in adorning her hair with flowers.
Here's what a friend told me;
"I have to admit before moving to India I didn't know about this. I asked another expat friend, "what does it signify?" He wasn't sure if it signified anything at all. "They just wear it for the scent and look of it," he told me.
Whenever I would see the girls walking around with the flowers in their hair, The Cowsills would pop into my head, and I'd be humming the tune all day.
One day, my friend came home and surprised me with flowers of my own.
In recent months, in India and Mumbai prominent celebrities have been using flowers as hair accessories and to great advantage. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan set the trend this season in her song Udi from Guzaarish, where she wore a single, large red rose in her hair making her look drop-dead gorgeous.
What Ash does others automatically ape.
Now everyone from the high-society ladies, to the teenaged college-going girls are sporting large flowers or a feather cluster in their hair; making them the cynosure of all eyes at fashion events and social dos.
And me the florist, Laxmi Lobo loves it .
Flowers always look beautiful and the fragrance they give off, always puts ones senses into a ethereal space.
